luthier
Adjacent to his central Pennsylvania home, Evan Jones can be found in his workshop, amidst the shavings of current projects as well as rows of seasoning hand-harvested material. Having always had a passion for woodworking, the last six years of his study have been devoted specifically to the design and construction of instruments. Concerning his design philosophy Evan states "I am not in love with any particular brand or style of the past, but rather with the evolution of art that this generation can call their own. Experimentation with instrument building is risky, especially when considering the time and energy required to complete a project of fine quality. But like music itself, there is plenty of room for originality within the bounds of traditional construction."
In addition to elegance of design, Evan pays particular attention to selecting very fine woods and animal material generally not seen (or heard) in the realm of musical instruments. Unlike most wood found in other fine instruments, all of the wood Evan uses is harvested in an environmentally conscious manner from species native to North America. He also gathers, mills, and seasons nearly all of this wood personally to ensure quality and consistency.
Evan's work has largely been focused on the archtop guitar, loved for its clarity of tone throughout the range, as well as for its structural stability and longevity as seen in its classical instrument cousins, the violin family. Among his most tantalizing details are his signature rattlesnake vertabrae inlays, deer antler nut and bridge strips, natural oil finishes, and liberal use of the finest North American wood, Osage Orange. Evan is always working on new and interesting designs, and will work with you personally to satisfy your customized order.
